After a long day and a murderously difficult drive home, you reach the gates of your house and your security system recognises your car. When you enter the house, the lights are already set to the level you prefer, and your current selection of favourites is murmuring from the hi-fi.

Yet even now the demands of the day have not completely disappeared. A glance at the office security system, relayed via a secure Internet connection, shows suspicious activity around the warehouse door. Zooming in from your remote control pad, you recognise the newly-arrived junior logistics assistant, grappling with the keys while the logistics manager looks on, glancing at his watch.

Now you can relax. A touch of the pad cancels the hi-fi and activates the TV, bringing up the evening news broadcast. After a few minutes, you wander into the kitchen to rustle up some supper; a small screen here continues the broadcast, with hi-fi sound from the kitchen sound system.

As you settle at the table, there is an explosion of sound from the entrance hall, proclaiming the arrival home of your wife and children. Fortunately, after the essential greetings, the kids disappear to their rooms, your son to work on the latest songs sent by his virtual band mates, your daughter to download the latest episode of her favourite soap opera. Later, you gather in front of the webcam for a video phone call to your mother-in-law in Nassau. To improve the picture, you dim the ambient lights and close the blinds from the remote control...
